HOME AUTOMATION USING IOT AND ITS APPLICATION

Home automation or making your homes smart is a process where like our smart phones, which make our life simple, our homes are also made smart. By making the home smart I mean; technologically making an environment in the home that helps us feel comfortable, secure and safe along with saving energy, time and money. These ideas were always in the minds of researchers and innovators but with the development and advancement of Internet of Technology these ideas are taking real shape.

Light and Device: Home automation will help the users check if they have turned off light and other electronic devices before leaving home or not. In case you forgot to turn something off, you can check its status through some mobile application. In case of a fault found, the device can be switched off immediately with the help of your smart phone just by a click of the button.

Webcam Surveillance: Web cam basically helps you see the images in a video format of the area to which the webcam points. This video can be seen on any kind of monitor. It can be your laptop, pc or even your mobile. In case you have a young child or your elderly parents at home, you can monitor their activities along with the activities of any outsider in your house. This makes your family more safe and secure.

Magnetic Door sensor: This sensor is put on the doors. It helps you know whenever somebody is leaving or entering your home. As soon as the magnetic sensor senses a change a notification is sent to your mobile. This way you can be updated about everything happening at your home in your absence.

IOT ELEMENTS

There are mainly three components of IOT a) Hardware – made up of sensors, actuators and embedded communication hardware b) Middleware - on demand storage and computing tools for data analytics and c) Presentation - novel easy to understand visualization and interpretation tools which can be widely accessed on different platforms and which can be designed for different applications. In this section, we discuss a few enabling technologies in these categories which will make up the three components stated above.

• Radio Frequency Identification (RFID): This technology works by hearing sounds. The frequencies in and around are recorded and a proper decision is made thereafter These RFID tags are not powered by battery.
• Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN): These sensors work by sensing the environmental conditions such as sound vibrations, temperature, pollutants etc. There are thousands of nodes in them with communicate with one another. The data is passed from one node to another node. It is one of the most important sensors when we talk about internet of things.
• Addressing Schemes: It is very important in IoT to uniquely identify things. This helps in proper controlling of devices. Some characteristics of creating a proper address are – reliable, persistent, scalable and obviously unique

THE DEVICE LAYER

The layer at the bottom is called the device layer. There are many types of devices available but for the devices to be called IoT devices, they should have certain characteristics. Like the devices must be able to intercommunicate with one another directly or indirectly, when attached to the internet.

Then there is the communication layer which helps to establish communication between various devices. There are a lot of well known protocols for smooth communication between devices and cloud. The best of three are:

• THE AGGREGATION/BUS LAYER: This is a very important layer in the architecture. It aggregates communication. It also provides the facility to communicate with an HTTP server and MOTT broker. It has the ability to combine and aggregate messages from different devices and route those messages towards a specific device. It also acts as a bridge between various protocols.
• THE EVENT PROCESSING AND ANALYTICS LAYER: It is the layer that takes up events from the bus and then these events are situation on which the architecture has to act upon. One of the main ability of this layer is that it stores data as well as its Meta data i.e. data about data. This layer follow many approaches to work on the events arrived.
• DEVICE MANAGEMENT: This task is done in partnership by two components. Using various protocols the server side system communicates with the devices. The software and applications deployed on the device are also partially managed by it. It is so powerful that in need it can lock any device.
